Suspects in Theft Hurt in Rollover Crash
ABC News reports that the three occupants in the Lexus sedan were fleeing officers from the South Pasadena Police Department shortly before the rollover accident, which destroyed the vehicle. According to authorities, the car was being pursued in a suspected catalytic converter theft.
The pursuit began, police say, when an officer patrolling the 1600 block of Fremont Avenue noticed a Lexus sedan double-parked immediately adjacent to a parked Toyota Prius at around 3 a.m. The officer reports that the Lexus did not have its headlights on or a rear license plate. In response, the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, and the suspects fled.
The driver of the Lexus allegedly sped down the road and ran several stop lights, causing the officer to abandon the pursuit for safety reasons. He then notified the Alhambra Police Department, who later found the single vehicle rolled over at the scene.
The road was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash. The three occupants, all male and ranging in age from 16 to 28 years old, remained in the hospital as of Friday.
